THE DOCTRINE OF THE FAITH

THE DOCTRINE OF THE FAITH

1 THESSALONIANS 1:10

11/57

      1.  His duty.

His Son

Genesis 1:1,2; Revelation 19:11-3

Truly God.  The middle of the Trinity.

Compare:  Mark 2:7  Who forgive but God?

:10  That many know...

      2.  His humanity.

From the dead.

It is for man to die - the certainty of His death, not bone, but spear, embalmed, tomb 3 days.

It is for man to die - to be hungry, the temptation.

It is for man to die - to be thirsty, tired, by the well.

Philipians 2:6-8

      3.  Unity of the Divine Power.

Even Jesus.

The fierce, violent Christological controversies.

            1.  Sabellius, Sabellianism:  three different phases under which deity manifested itself:  sun, heat, light.

            2.  Arius, Arianism.

Subordination of the Son to the Father.  Not of the same essence.  Athanasius - same essence, identical in substance, distinctive in personality.

Arius - similar essence, likeness in it, but not same.

            3.  Apollinarius, Apollinarianism.  Christ a mixture of God, man, illustrates without irreverent interest by hybrid animals, mule.

            4.  Nestorius, Nestoriansim.  Two natures destroy it.  Man and God in Christ.

            5.  Eutyches, Monophysites.  One in nature.  They illustrate divine overwhelmed.

      1.  We, lost guilty sinners, in the path of the wrath and judgment of Almighty God.

The wrath to come.  The wrath which is coming.

Phrase in Matthew 3:7; Luke 3:7.

Now:

John 3:18  condemned already.

:36  wrath of God abideth.

Psalm 7:11 God is angry with the wicked every day.

Coming:

Revelation 6:12-17

20:11-15

      2.  Christ died to deliver us from the judgment.

Raised from the dead after the day of the cross.

Purpose of His coming:

To die, our substitute.

Without shedding of blood.  Hebrews 9:22.

For the transgressions of my people was He stricken.  Isaiah 53:8

The Lamb slain from foundation of the world.  Revelation 13:8

Not saved by His good life, example, tears, prayers.

But by His death:  The Lamb of God.

OT by the pledge, Matthew 17, Moses, Elijah, about His death.

NT by the cross, song in heaven, Revelation 15.  Paul in Galatians 6:14.

      1.  His resurrection.

Whom He raised from the dead.

The acceptance of Christ by the Father.

Here the assurance we are accepted in Him.

Raised for our justification.  Romans 4:25, the sign of it.

Our salvation in the belief, acceptance.

Romans 10:9,10

Not to think of Him as dead, but as Revelation 1:13-16.

We are to remember Golgotha, 1 Corinthians 11:23-26.  But our Lord is in heaven.  Remember also the empty tomb, Galilee, Olivet.

      2.  His coming again.

Wait for His Son from Heaven.

            1.  His ascension.

Not come if not go hence.

Ephesians 4:8  ascended up...gave gifts.

In heaven preparing a place for us, John 14:1ff.

In heaven with saving power.  Hebrews 7:25 able to save to uttermost...

Ruling all things for the salvation of the elect, accomplishment of His blessed purpose.

            2.  His coming again.

Every chapter closes with the Second Advent.

As surely as He died He lives.

As surely as He lives will He come to earth again.
