I. Our Heavenly Security In This Life

1. 6:25, 28
Cankering care, corroding anxiety is contrary to all the lessons of nature, which show it to be unnecessary
Fowls of the air have not our superior advantage, yet God cares for the
lilies of the field ñ
(a) Said the sparrow to the robin,
“I would really like to know,
Why these anxious human beings
Rush around and worry so.”

Said the robin to the sparrow,
“I think that it must be
That they have no heavenly Father
Such as cares for you and me.”

2. 6:32
Contrary to the lessons of natural revelation, we are like the heathen --
Full of superstitions, fears, perturbations, dread
(a) King of Oyo (Africa) - Fetishes. Devil’s house - “Can harm me.”

3. 6:34
Contrary to the whole order of providence, to worry is futile
Every day is evil --no one escapes
a cloud arises from somewhere
(a) Achilles, Styx, Hector, Paris
(b) Ahab’s armor

II. Our Heavenly Security in the Life to Come

Col 3.2
When I came to Dallas
Nathan Adams
Bob Thornton
Fred Florence
Woodall Rogers, neighbor
“The Dydamic of Dallas” - Reader’s Digest
Now somebody else lives across the street
“ ” “ runs the bank
is seated in the office
is living in the house

“Earthly treasures are like poppies spread,
You seize the flower, the bloom is dead.”

6:19-21
Our treasure is there not here
“ home
” inheritance

How to get these treasures there
(1) By someone who is going there
people, family, friends
(2) By filling the pages of God’s Book of Life
with service to God.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.”

How rich the reward?
(a) Old country preacher - “Is this death? This?
The angels sing, the beautiful city.
The throne of God. Oh, glory, glory, glory.”

“Take thought” in 1611

Shakespeare, Julius Caesar ii, 1.
“Take thought and die for Caesar.”

Antony and Cleopatra
Cleopatra says to Enobarbus: “What shall we do, Enobarbus?”
He replies: “Take thought and die.”

Francis Bacon, History of Henry the Eighth, speaks of a man “dying with thought and anguish” before his case was heard.

A historian of the period:
“Queen Catherine died of thought.”

So 1 Sam. 9:5
All previous versions “be not careful.”
The 1611 translation supposed the words “take not thought” were stronger.

Merimnao
“to be troubled with cares”
“to be distracted with anxiety”
“cankering care, corroding anxiety”

To Him Whose Eye Is Upon The Sparrow.

I know that I can trust my Lord
To keep the stars in place
To grant the lark, the rose, the oak
His wisdom and His grace.

I know that I can trust my Lord
To send the morning light
To turn each winter into spring,
To rule each depth, each height.

I know that everywhere I look
I see His guiding hand,
More beauty, mercy, love and faith
Than I can understand.

Then why should I refuse to trust
Those things I cannot see
To Him who knows tomorrow’s needs?
He cares for you and me.

With Christ in the vessel, I smile at the storm.
