Frozen Assets

Frozen Assets

Mark 10:17-22

3/83

The story told 3 times in the Bible

Matt. 19:16-22; Lk. 18:18-23

The tragedy written in the young man's face

Stugnazo Mk. 10:22; Matt. 16:3

(a)  Holman Hunt’s famous painting: inviting to help and live for a lost and needy world

Possessed every endowment, gift, asset

1.    His High Status

(1)   Rich - To that culture, people, a sign of favor of God

(2)   Young - Ever interesting, dynamic

(3)   Ruler - Influence, recognition

2.    His Open Courage

"ran to Jesus"    No common reason an oriental to break the slow, steady, dignified stride

"in the way"      In open daylight

cf.  Nicodemus

cf.  Joseph of Arimathea

"________"Didaskale Agathe- never applied even in the Talmud to the great rabbis-Only God

        Jesus noticed this.

3.    His Moral Obedience

Kept the commandments, not a day, a week, a year, but a lifetime.

The pure Jesus "loved him."

What he could have meant to the kingdom of our Lord.

But all of it cast away  --  Frozen assets

His heart not committed to God, but to the world -

Loved his possessions more than he loved God.

Willing to give to God everything except his stake in the world.

His gifts, endowments, riches

(a)   Poem  -     "But now the weight of age

has laid me low,

The hand of death is seeking

And I am left alone

with but my wealth

When once eternal life

was in my grasp.
